Ready to ride with more confidence?

Adult Cycle Training

Sustainable Kirriemuir is a Cycling Scotland approved training provider. This means we can offer friendly, practical cycle training sessions that fit your needs. We deliver a range of Adult Cycle Training sessions including:

  • Absolute Beginners
  • Introduction to On-road Cycling
  • Advanced On-road Cycling
  • Family Cycle Training
  • Cargo Bike Training

We’ll work with you to decide on the most appropriate session, so don’t worry about trying to pick one! The first step is to complete a short Registration Form and we’ll do the rest!

Bike Buddies

We have lots of confident cyclists in Kirriemuir, and some of them love cycling so much they would love to be your bike buddy!

If you don’t feel you need structured cycle training but need a bit of motivation to get out on your bike more, this option is for you. Maybe you’re keen to explore new routes but would rather have some company along the way, or maybe you want to get into the habit of cycling regularly and need some accountability. Whatever your reason, our Bike Buddies are at your service!

Complete a Registration Form today and we’ll be in touch to match you up with one of our volunteer buddies.

How it Works

You complete a registration form, letting us know if you’re looking for a Bike Buddy or Adult Cycle Training (or maybe you’re not sure yet – that’s ok!). For those looking for Adult Cycle Training:

We’ll arrange a chat about what you’d like to work on. Maybe that’s signalling and rules of the road, cycling with kids, or just feeling steadier in traffic.

We’ll agree who, where and when your first session will take place. Sessions usually last around 2–2.5 hours, with up to three follow-ups if you’d like.

Ideally you’ll bring along your own bike, but if you haven’t got that far yet we can supply you with one of our demo bikes, just let us know when completing the registration form.

Thanks to funding from NHS Tayside Charitable Foundation and Cycling Scotland, these sessions are free. However, donations to support our work are always welcome.

I’ve always loved cycling – when I was younger bikes provided access to so many adventures that wouldn’t of been possible otherwise. Now retired, I’m happy to tootle about the surrounding towns and villages. Sometimes travelling a bit futher afield with a mix of cycling and public transport.

I ride an e-bike, a hybrid bike, and a folding bike, so I’m flexible and happy to ride with others on either. I prefer routes that avoid busy main roads where possible and make the most of quieter lanes and countryside.

I’m generally available for rides, especially on weekdays, either daytime or evenings. I’m easy-going about ride style and distance and happy to join short, medium, or longer rides.

For me, a good ride is often improved by a stop for coffee and treats, and I believe that sometimes the best way to enjoy our beautiful countryside is to hop off and walk up that hill.

I’ve been riding bikes for as long as I can remember. As a kid, BMX was my whole world — these days the bikes have changed, but the love of cycling hasn’t! I now spend my time on road, gravel and mountain bikes, enjoying everything from long days in the hills to the buzz of cycling around town. I’m also a keen motorcyclist, which has shaped how I think about risk and vulnerability around traffic.

I started volunteering with Sustainable Kirriemuir in 2025, helping to support the charity’s popular social rides. I also work for one of the UK’s largest cycling charities, where I help deliver safer cycling infrastructure across the country.

I’m passionate about helping people build confidence on a bike and discover the freedom, enjoyment, and health benefits that cycling can bring.

When I’m not on two wheels, you’ll usually find me climbing, hiking, or snowboarding.

I’ve loved cycling since childhood. After spending years taking part in amateur competitive events, at home and abroad, I now ride simply for enjoyment. Cycling makes me feel alive and grounded, connected to nature and fully immersed in the landscape.

Since retiring a few years ago, my bike of choice has become an e-mountain bike, ideal for long days exploring the Angus glens, where breathtaking views unfold in every direction. Every so often I return to my road bike and the quiet backroads I’ve always loved.

Having recently completed Cycle Leader training I’m excited to encourage and support fellow cyclists to ‘get out there’ and enjoy life on two wheels.

We are so lucky in Kirrie to be surrounded by quiet, interesting roads. I moved to Kirriemuir in 2000 and have enjoyed exploring the area by bike. The glens are amazing and give great exercise with café and picnic stops. I also love mountain biking and again the Kirriemuir area gives lots of off road options. Going further afield I enjoy camping or cycling out to remote bothies, a great way to see Scotland.

I retired from teaching in April but still spend time teaching youngsters cycling skills, both road and mountain biking. Now that I am semi-retired I’m available for cycling at any time.

Bike Buddy

I have cycled for as long as I can remember; road bikes, MTB, tandem, recumbent, unicycle… though these days I use my e-MTB for my daily commute to work. I have never learned to drive, so am very confident on the road on my bike. I recently cycled back from Aberdeen to Kirriemuir, using every type of surface available, from single person gravel footpaths to short sections of duel carriageway.

My favourite things are forestry tracks and former railway lines; I love a good explore. I will ride in ANY weather, but ideally when it’s dry! My availability varies due to a seasonal work schedule, but I’m mostly available weekends/evenings.

Millie Stevenson

Bike Buddy

I’ve been cycling since I was little, but I really rediscovered my love for it about nine years ago after doing an adult cycle skills course through work. It helped me build confidence on the roads, and now I love getting out on my bike whenever I can.

I’m especially keen on exploring the quiet country roads around Kirrie, bonus points if the route includes a good coffee stop. If you enjoy relaxed rides, discovering new routes, and cycling for the joy of it rather than the rush, I’d be very happy to be your bike buddy and plan some local rides together.
