We Are…

Sustainable Kirriemuir

Our vision is for Kirriemuir to be a sustainable net-zero community where people and nature flourish.

Our Mission

To lead our community to learn, teach, adapt and share the skills, knowledge, activities and practices to enable healthy and happy people and a healthy planet.

Our Values

  • Promoting environmental and social sustainability is essential in all our work.
  • We value the strength of diversity, in nature, people, and projects.
  • Being collaborative, accessible and community-led is fundamental to our work.
  • We seek practical, innovative and adaptive solutions.
  • We are regenerative, never exhaustive, exploitative, nor competitive.

About Us

Sustainable Kirriemuir began in August 2019 when two people organised a public meeting to share views on how the Kirriemuir community could take positive climate action. It was attended by 26 local people, and on 19th Sept 2019 we became a constituted group.

“It’s easy to think that you have no power, no influence and that you are too small to make a difference. Perhaps you feel that your life is too busy, or that that you don’t know enough. Where you decide to focus your time, energy, and money, will build and develop the world we share.”
– Kate Munro, SK Founding Member.

In April 2020 we launched our first big 2-year project, Nourish Kirriemuir. This project was supported by a grant of £162,644 from the Climate Challenge Fund. The grant arrived one week into the first lockdown. The pandemic turned our plans upside down, forcing a complete rethink. However, the project was embraced by the local community and was more successful than we could have hoped.

We took our next steps in January 2022 when we launched our second big 2-year project, Future Kirrie. This was supported by a National Lottery Community Fund award of £150,000. As part of this project, we carried out a wide-ranging consultation with the community, and in April 2023 we launched our Strategic Plan 2023 – 2027. This is our shared vision, which is guiding our current work. We also became a registered SCIO, SC052779, in August 2023!

In Summer 2024 we embarked on a new stage of our journey to sustainability, with the beginnings of our Market Garden, and the launch of our Active Travel Hub project. Our Community Garden continues to thrive and our Action for Nature group are swiftly becoming a force for good!
