Easter Egg Box Craft Competition, with the Co-op and the Star Rock Shop!

Back in March 2021, we partnered up with the wonderful Star Rock Confectionery Shop and the local Kirriemuir Co-op to run a special Easter competition, shining a light on recycling and reuse.

Sheep Egg Box Competition CreationOur competition was open to anyone in the Kirriemuir area and encouraged locals to brighten their day by getting creative with their spare cardboard egg boxes! We encouraged the public to show off their skills by consciously re-purposing the egg boxes by using craft tools and materials that they already owned, along with other colourful items destined for the bin.

Egg boxes will soon become one of the materials the Star Rock Shop uses for their packaging, as they look to support and encourage zero waste and circularity with their products and business model.

Mario Kart Egg Box Competition CreationEntries were submitted to the Co-op Roods during the week commencing the 22nd of March, with the judging completed on Saturday 27th of March by local resident artist Maureen Crosbie from Gallus Glass, with the co-op manager Nicki Wilson lending her expertise. It was decided that the winner was the crocodile, designed and painted by Dylan McIntosh and Josh James Anton, with a further prize going to Katie Gow who designed and painted the red kite. The Co-op Member Pioneer Tracey Inglis couldn’t decide, so declared everyone a winner and presented an Easter Egg to all entries! All designs were displayed for a week in the Co-op and admired by many. Well done to all 24 participants, wonderful work and a great attitude to reuse.

The winning creations!

The Star Rock Shop was established in 1833 by David Ferguson. It still trades today from the same premises in the Roods, Kirriemuir, making it the oldest producing and continuously trading sweet shop in Scotland.

Current owner, Liz Crossley-Davies, is working hard in the shop whilst supporting other community groups and helping make our town a brighter, happier place.
