Kirriemuir Food Hub

A non-profit voluntary run organisation based in the centre of Kirriemuir

Their mission is to help combat food insecurity and reduce food waste by repurposing and redistributing food. With overlapping goals, we began working in partnership in September of 2020, to better the environment and enhance the community as a team.

Continually developing and expanding their operations, Kirriemuir Food Hub is now registered with the HUBBUB Community Fridge Network. This means that a proportion of the food saved from waste is available for anyone in the local area to collect and use, giving us all a chance to do our bit to address local food waste. So, next time you are in the town, make sure to nip into the hub and see what’s available! If using the Community Fridge, donations are welcome to help the food hub in addressing food insecurity. A suggested donation is a tin from the cupboard or a spare toilet roll.

From September 2020 until March 2022 over 24 tonnes of food was saved from waste and redirected via the hub for people just like you, to eat and enjoy! This is the equivalent of saving more than 68 tonnes of CO2 emissions, which is like driving an average car from Kirriemuir to Forfar more than 20,000 times. Wow!

Kirriemuir Food Hub is now registered with the Community Fridge Network, HUBBUB!

When you support us, we can help address local food insecurity.

Pop in and see what’s on offer, and don’t forget we take donations too!

We can’t wait to see you!

An update from the SK Team…

We love working with the Kirriemuir Food Hub. They do amazing things every day to address local food waste and food insecurity. They always think of fantastic new ideas to get everyone in Kirrie involved, like the pop-up café and school holiday packed lunches. We look forward to continuing our partnership!

On discovering the Community Fridge…

One day I was out walking my dog and saw this wee display with bread and veg, and a big sign saying “Help Yourself”. Well, I’m quite nosey and can’t help myself, so I tried to sneak over for a wee peak. Next thing this woman appears with a box of veg to fill up the shelf. I’m caught, I try to tell her I don’t need help but she’s not listening. She said it’s for everyone, to help reduce food waste. I wasn’t convinced, but we had a right good blether and I went away with two big bags with all sorts. I love cooking, especially with all this time on my hands so I always pop by now and see what I can get and what I can make it into. Sometimes I don’t leave with much, but at least I’ve had a chat with someone other than my husband. I love the hub, it’s so brilliant to have this in our wee toon.

Addressing Food Waste…

We use the hub to now reduce food waste in our community. Teaching the kids how to make healthy meals with what ever ingredients are in front of you is a fun challenge. Thank you to the hub for the wonderful job you do, we shall be forever grateful for how you service our whole town and always make us feel welcome.
