Increase your cycling confidence with…

Essential Cycle Skills

Looking to improve your cycling ability? We have THE training course for you!

Sustainable Kirriemuir is an official Cycling Scotland training provider. This means we can offer essential cycle skills training tailored to you. The training sessions we offer are; Absolute Beginners, Introduction to On-road Cycling, Advanced On-road Cycling, Cargo Bike Training and Family Cycle Training. Family Cycle Training begins with a 1-1 session for the parent/carer with follow on sessions with family members. Visit the Cycling Scotland website to read more about each session.

Our sessions aim to build cycling confidence tailored to what you need, to get you out on your bike. If you haven’t been out on your bike for a while, aren’t feeling that confident cycling, need some confidence or training on cycling in traffic, or are a complete beginner, then these sessions are for you.

Our Active Travel Officer Christina is a qualified Cycle Ride Leader and Cycle Trainer, having recently completed her training through Cycling Scotland. She’s also a keen, social cyclist, and loves being able to support others to get out on their bike, no matter what their skill level.

Sound good? Here’s what you need to know!

What do I need?

You’ll need your own bike (in working order) to be able to take part in the cycling sessions. If you’re interested and don’t currently have your own bike, please get in touch and we can signpost you to local stockists or suggest low-cost ways of acquiring a new-to-you bike. You’ll also need clothes suitable for the weather conditions.

How does it work?

During an initial conversation we’ll discuss what you’d like to achieve from the sessions and make a plan, tailored to you. It might be that you’d like to be able to commute to work by bike, you’d like to feel confident enough to cycle to local beauty spots or cafés, or you just want to be able to go for a cycle into the town centre for your shopping! By the time you’ve finished the sessions, we hope you’ll feel confident to take to two wheels, either alone or with a small group.

How much time will it take?

How long each session lasts, and how many sessions you need, is all down to the individual. We recommend allowing 2-2.5 hours for your first session, with up to a further 3 follow up sessions offered.

How much does it cost?

Thanks to funding from Paths for All and NHS Tayside Charitable Foundation we’re offering these sessions free of charge. If you’d like to make a donation to support our future Active & Sustainable Travel work, you can do so here.

Ready to get cycling?

All you need to do is complete a Registration Form to let us know you’re interested in 1-1 cycle sessions. Christina will then be in touch with 10 workings days to arrange an initial chat.

Our first participant…

As someone who was very rusty, Christina was a patient, friendly, confident teacher and was good at helping me learn at a pace that suited me.

The fact I can now cycle with cars on the road, which was one of my biggest fears is amazing! I would definitely recommend cycle training with Christina.
